India has a coastline of 6000 km, as a result it has many beaches on both sides of the penninsular. Considering the total beach area India has, Indian beaches are very under-utilized as tourist spots. Some beaches that have become popular attract international travellers. There are some private beaches developed by star hotels and some beaches are away from the population and are therefore comparable with the best beaches in the world. Yet there are other beaches, that though very popular with local tourists, are ill maintained and are far from utilizing their full potential.

The white sand beaches in Andaman with turquoise waters and sublime marine life and the gorgeous and enchanting beaches of Lakshadweep are world class, but are less crowded. The goa beaches are popular tourist destinations and tourists keep coming back to laid back and fun loving goa. Beaches like in Chennai are long and numerous but mainly attract local tourists as they are very much next to a metropolis and do not offer much privacy.
